Sustainability at UH-GAF

The University is committed to sustainable development of current and future activities within and beyond the campus.  Being present in the New Administrative Capital in Cairo we are committed to reaching the targets for sustainable development including clean energy as required by the Administrative Capital for Urban Development (ACUD).  The University has developed a sustainability plan which covers the following action areas:

  • Energy and carbon management
  • Water management
  • Waste management and recycling
  • Sustainable procurement
  • Health and wellness
  • Campus awareness and community engagement

The University is also a signatory to the“Race to Zero” initiative for Universities and Colleges (www.educationracetozero.org).  The University is committed to become netcarbon zero by 2040 which aligns with the full development of the campus in theNew Administrative Capital and the requirements for utilization of solar powerto generate at least 30% of our electricity needs.

OUR ACTION PLAN

1. Energy and Carbon Management
  • Transfer all electricity generation from existing generators (diesel) to grid provisions(target date 2024): STATUS GREEN
  • Work on introducing solar panels on campus to reduce carbon footprint (target date 2035): STATUS ORANGE
  •  Develop anEnergy Action Strategy that reduces energy use per capita on campus by 30% in2026 (target 2026): STATUS ORANGE
  •  Place instructional signs in laboratories and offices regarding power saving approaches (target 2024): STATUS GREEN
  • Design new buildings to be low energy and energy efficient (target from 2022): STATUS GREEN
  •  All construction and refurbishment projects to incorporate commitment to reduce carbon emissions (Target from 2023): STATUS GREEN
  • Providing bus transportation to reduce carbon emissions (target 2019): STATUS GREEN
  • Urban extension in preparation with electrical vehicle lots and charger stations(Target 2028): STATUS ORANGE
  • Provide some of our buildings with productive green plant roof scaping (target 2025): STATUS ORANGE
2. Water Management
  • Reduce water usage per capita on campus by 10% (target 2024): STATUS GREEN
  • Install water stations to replace the use of disposable water bottles in teaching buildings (Target2023): STATUS GREEN
  • Use of waste water to enable irrigation or campus foliage and green areas (Target2024): STATUS GREEN
  • Develop and implement an on-campus hydroponic garden and initiate advanced agriculture techniques such as aquaponics and hydroponics (target 2025): STATUS RED
  • Using some of the landscape as a xeriscape to reduce water consumption (target 2025): STATUS ORANGE
  • Participating in training programmes relating to water and irrigation (target 2024): STATUS GREEN
3. Waste Management
  • Integrate waste sorting stations across campus (target 2023): STATUS GREEN
  • Reduce plastic water bottle usage on campus by 50% (Target 2024): STATUS GREEN
  • Encourage individuals to minimize use of paper for printing emails etc via an information campaign (Target 2024): STATUS ORANGE
  • Install hand dryers in all communal toilet facilities (Target 2024): STATUS GREEN
  • Incentivize food outlets to use recyclable materials for food packaging (Target 2025): STATUS ORANGE
  • Produce student project initiatives to use recycled materials for design and innovation(TARGET 2023): STATUS GREEN
4. Health and Wellbeing
  •  Improve pedestrian areas and shading to encourage use of outdoor spaces (Target 2024): STATUS GREEN
  • Work with the Health Clinic and Student Services to promote a smoke free environment on campus with appropriate no smoking signage (target 2023): STATUS GREEN
  • Increase green areas on campus for leisure and social interactions (TARGET ONGOING as campus expands): STATUS ORGANGE
  • Having a gymnastic hall and sports courts (target 2020): STATUS GREEN
  • Having awell-being office to maintain the stakeholders wellbeing (target 2019): STATUS GREEN
  • Providing all disabled requirements such as ramps (outdoors, indoors), utilities (disabled toilet lot) and others (target ongoing as campus develops): STATUS GREEN
5. Campus awareness and Community Engagement
  • Raise awareness of sustainability actions and commitment to race to zero on campus through internal and external events including website (ONGOING): STATUS GREEN
  • Sending footprint assessment for all university staff members to monitor their carbon emission (target 2026): STATUS ORANGE
  • Participate in COP related events (ONGOING): STATUS ORANGE
  • Celebrate international days /weeks related to sustainability such as Earth Day, Water conservation day etc. (ONGOING): STATUS ORANGE
  • Integrate sustainability into UH-GAF’s new strategic plan (2026-2031) (Target 2026): STATUS ORANGE
  • Invite speakers from a range of external stakeholders to focus on sustainability and net zero(ONGOING): STATUS GREEN
  • Set up an office for sustainability to coordinate activities across campus (Target 2025): STATUS RED
  • Supporting students with field trips introducing them to different sustainability aspects implementations (target 2024): STATUS GREEN
  • Supporting the community with public lectures about sustainability and communities by UH-GAF staff (target ongoing): STATUS GREEN
  • Participating in WUF 12 in the capacity of communities and urbanism (target 2024): STATUS GREEN
